HELP STAN SAKAI!

For nearly 30 years, Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo has set a high-water mark for creator-owned comics.
Stan’s wife, Sharon, has battled a debilitating illness for some time; after an extended hospital stay and convalescence, she is now back home, but her condition requires 24-hour care and medicines that cost more than their insurance covers.

If you'd like yo help now-- You can contribute money to help Stan and Sharon here.

UPDATE! The Paypal link is up and working. CAPS had some tax paperwork to take care of and now it's all handled. If you've already given money-- Stan & Sharon have it. If you weren't able to before because the paypal was down, thanks for checking back in!

CAPS, the Cartoon Art Professional Society, has decided to provide whatever assistance we can, starting with an ongoing auction of original art. 100% of the proceeds will go directly to Stan & Sharon to help pay their ongoing medical expenses.

Creators and publishers, We are asking for your help; please contribute original artwork to this worthy cause.
Print off this form...
and Send us your original art donation or product so that we can include it in our auction. Many, many THANKS!!

Bloggers, tumblers and tweeters, please spread the word. Feel free to re-post this wherever you think is appropriate.

  1. I have zero art skills, but would like to help out Stan and Sharon. Any way to donate without using PayPal? Call me paranoid, but I've had very bad experiences using PayPal and would prefer to provide a donation some other way.

  2. When will the auction be held? Or is that still TBD?

    1. They're still working out the details.

    2. How can I set myself to be notified when a date is announced for the auction? I've met Stan Sakai a few times and I would really like to help. He's been super nice to me and even gave me a free poster. I'm not rich, but I'd love to make that the most profitable free poster he's ever given away.

    3. Have you tried setting up a GoFundMe page ? Their donation format is much easier to use and for people to find.

    1. They had a couple numbers transposed on the flyer. It's fixed. (310) 365-8457 is the correct number. (Try not to call on Thanksgiving.) Good catch. Thanks!

  6. Yeah. I'd like to donate, but I can't. :'( And all this time I was wondering why Usagi Yojimbo wasn't on ComiXology. I would like to help Mr. Sakai in any way I can!

  9. Do we send original art to the address on the form, what if our image was done digitally, could we just email and have you print it out for the auction?

    1. Better to print it out and physically mail it to the address. Thanks!

  10. Could a book of art be printed ala the baltimore comic con tribute book of the donated art? That might be a good offering to encourage the masses to donate.

  11. Hello! In an effort to signal boost this, we at Radio Comix have posted about it on our front page. However, we'd like permission to also post the donation flyer and the CAPS "help the Sakais" skyscraper. Would there be any issues with that?

    1. No issues at all. Thanks. By the way. Paypal issue is obviously a bigger problem than we'd thought originally. They're working on it.

    2. I see. I've been checking this site to see if Paypal is working, but apparently it is still broken. I hope you could fix it soon.

  16. Hi, the Artist Comic Collective of Las Vegas would love to help with original art for the auction, i'm getting together the available artist of the ACC to help out the Sakai family. If there is a deadline id love to know so we can have it all done before then. I might be inking and coloring many of the pieces. Also is a one forum for all or one for each we send in? Good luck and best wishes!

  17. I wouldn't count on PayPal getting this "straightened out". They have a history of acting bizarrely towards fundraisers like this. I suspect they've frozen the involved account, and are giving unhelpful reasons for it? Probably saying it somehow violates their terms of agreement? I've seen this movie before, on regretsy.com.

  18. Word came last night that Stan's grandson passed away in his sleep. I cannot imagine what the family is going through right now.

I have put the call out to the Furry Fandom, which Stan has long supported. Whatever we can do to try to help him through these rough times, we're willing to do it.

  19. Another choice is creating a http://www.youcaring.com/ fundraiser, their platform seems to be very good for this and they accept other forms of payment beyond Paypal.

  20. Has a cut off date for art submissions been posted? Or do we have a date of the auction yet? I am waiting on some art that I would like to submit.

  21. I'm curious about the auction date as well. I'm not a famous artist at all but I have a piece I've done that I'd like to submit for the auction.
